AUSTRALIA CHAMPS 2016 - DREAM TEAM
The Australia Open was held between 13-16 November 2016 at the impressive Runaway Bay Cricket Club. 33 extremely diverse sides from across Australia descended on the Bay with the hopes of walking away with the title of Australian Champions 2016 and 600 points worth $6000.00 US.
Â
There were many questions heading into the tournament. Would the defending champions the,Â
2nd XI, be able to retain their title? CouldÂ
Tradies you cant Trust take home another title or would the likes of eitherÂ
Spider Monkeys,Â
Punjab XI,Â
Rock Lobsters orÂ
Woodies walk away with the coveted title of Australian Champions?
Â
As expected many of the favourites made light work of their more social opposition. One side who got the tournament off to a solid start were the likes of Ocean 12 who posted a blistering 341 in their second game of the tournament. Woodies were another side that had a superior batting line up by posting 244 against the Underdogs who had travelled all the way from Perth. Woodies eventually stumbled against Tradies you cant Trust in the Quarter Finals.
Â
After a fierce battle in the closing stages of the tournament, sides from four different regions were represented in the semi finals: Ocean 12 (Sydney), Frederick Spofforth (Brisbane), Rock Lobsters (Wollongong) and Tradies you cant Trust (Gold Coast). After some incredibly competitive semi finals, the two sides heading into the final were Ocean 12 and Rock Lobsters. What is unique about this picture is that Ocean 12 are a side made up of Tamil asylum seekers from Sri Lanka. Many of the squad have come through detention centres after their arrival, but now they found themselves in the Australian National finals. At this point of the event it was always going to be hard to predict which side would take home the title of Australian Champs. Both equally adaptable to their surroundings with well-rounded  sides, only time would tell. Many have called the final the most exciting LMS match they have seen as Ocean 12 held their nerve to win it with the final ball. They have now leaped to 2nd on the WCQ Leaderboard with 600 points valued at $6000 while Rock Lobster, as runners up, went away with 100 points worth $1000.00.
Â
Â
While the battle for Australian braggy rights is now over, the question now is – Do Tradies you cant Trust have another World Champs in them, could Ocean 12 go all the way and win World Champs or do the likes of Woodies, Rock Lobsters, Old Fools, Punjab XI or even 3 Short have what it takes to give Australia that first World Championship Title in Cape Town, South Africa in 2017?
