The Joburg Open was a huge success with some of the top sides from in and around South Africa gunning for Race to Cape Town points.

The main WCQ event was always set to be a tough with all sides in with a chance of winning the tournament. The favourites, On the Field (2nd seed) and Rebels (1st seed) were keen to make an impact. Things soon changed when the likes of Tanks Plumbing CBC, Die Span and Thunder Dragons started to fire. While Tanks Plumbing CBC lost one group game, their batting was superior to most teams and they managed to secure a semi final spot after day one. Thunder Dragons and Die Span were also on fire and with 2 bonus point victories which meant that they headed into the semi finals as the teams to beat.

Unfortunately Tanks Plumbing CBC couldn't muster enough to get through to the finals after going down to Thunder Dragons. Rebels cruised past Die Span who, until that point, had looked like comfortable finalists after beating On the Field in the group stages. The Final of the WCQ event would see the top seed Rebels take on the tournament dark horses in Thunder Dragons. Thunder Dragons got off to a rocky start after losing two quick wickets after some great bowling from Keith Dudgeon. They steadied the ship and posted a defendable 140 after 20. Rebels went into bat and from the get go, slow and steady was the game plan. Rebels batted with calm heads and unlike their previous final at the Joburg South Open, went about things calmly. Martin van Wyk and Eugenio Menezes gave Rebels the start they needed and with 20 runs required after the last 3 overs, it was always going to be difficult for Thunder Dragons to defend. Some fielding mistakes cost Thunder Dragons in the closing stages and Rebels won by 6 wickets. The final score card can be seen HERE.

While the WCQ event was running the ever enthusiastic Cow Corner Cup teams got started. The top seeds Bloem Vikings looked dominant after cruising to a bonus point victory against Prickly Piranha Lickers in their first game. Bloem Vikings wouldn't have it easy though with a very strong MASAGAMY side looking to win their second Cow Corner Cup. In what were must win groups games, Bloem Vikings managed to hold off the batting onslaught posed by MASAGAMY to secure a finals spot. Cant Remember, who were the 2nd seed going into the tournament, still had nightmares after the Joburg South Open where they finished last. After narrowlingly beating SLAP in their opening game, they had dominant performance against “Mixed Grill” securing their spot at the top of the log after day one. Bloem Vikings were an impressive unit and were crowd favourites to win the CCC. Cant Remember had other ideas and after posting a solid score of 169, Bloem Vikings would need a solid batting performance to win the event. Cant Remember managed to hold their nerve and take home their first Tournament Victory. The final score card can be seen HERE.
