Match report by Jon Berghdal of Above Average vs Chris Pringle
Yes, it is official, Above Average average are ranked 257th in the world (out of 258 teams). Average’s slide down the rankings came as a result of back to back defeats against 10th placed Chris Pringle.
In the first match, on Thursday 5th June, AA put in a magnificent fielding performance, including acrobatic catches, run outs and 3-wicket hauls. Average managed to bowl out Chris Pringle for 197 after 17.2 overs, including 3 wickets from debutant, Lancastrian Suroop John (3-23). Fellow newcomer Jon Horne took two wickets as Average refused to lie down and die. Unfortunately it was the same old story with the bat. There were more collapses than at a Blazin Squad gig (?) and only a valuable 27 from George Joyal restored some pride in the Average innings who were bowled out for 96 (15.1 overs).
OH MY GASH
Opener Preeth Chandana retired hurt as Above Average tumbled to their fifth successive defeat, in the repeat fixture against Chris Pringle.
Preeth was sweeping along nicely when he top edged onto his chin on 13.Fortunately this was not of Daniel Flynn
proportions and Preeth was able to stand as the last man later on in the innings.
Fellow opener Matt Peet top-scored on 23 for Average, but yet again Average batted themselves out. Debutant Arsalan Amanullah (10) shared a lengthly partnership with captain Jon Bergdahl (17), but the run-rate achieved by Average was never going to be enough to tame Chris Pringle.
Above Average scored 98 from 18 overs – in response, Chris Pringle strolled home after 13 overs for the loss
of two wickets.
WAR CRY
Captain Jon Bergdahl today issued a war cry in response to Above Average’s lowly ranking, and performances to date.
“We need players with a will to commit, and a will to win, and fast. Two or three ever-present names on a teamsheet is not good enough to see us through a season. We have something of a backbone, but nothing
down the order once the openers, and perhaps number three goes. We are bound to be under-cooked and put in half-baked performances like the one last Thursday if our attitude and commitment continues as it is.
Come on guys lets step it up, we have to start playing like we want to win”
