BETFAIR BARNES MID WEEK LEAGUE
WINNER OF THIS LEAGUE QUALIFIES FOR THE CHAMPS LEAGUE DAY ON THE 31ST AUGUST. LOOSING FINALIST WILL PLAY IN THE CHAMPS LEAGUE QUALIFYING WEEK 11-14 AUGUST
The Barnes Midweek League final took place on gloomy but Electric evening on thursday. With the weather threatening to steal the show both Marble Hill and Putney took the field with genuine excitement and determination. The watching Marble Hill entourage, random passers by and even umpire himself were treated to a thrilling contest.
Marble hill won the toss and elected to bat and were immediately put on the back foot by some Putney Bowling that was about a tight as Jacque Kallis in Lycra. They were backed up by some fantastic fielding. Marble Hill battled hard with Donovan Victor providing some good resistance but in the end it was James Peters, the leagues best bowler, and his zippy off spin that restricted Marble Hill to 103. However Marble Hill are nothing if not determined and the team were energetic and vocal as they entered the field for Putney's innings. They were further buoyed by the bowling of the spirited Neil Versfeld who took two early wickets while going for very little runs. We had a game on our hands. It swung from team to team as Putney struggled for runs and Marble Hill Struggled for Wickets. With the light deteriorating the game moved into the final two overs with Marble Hill needing the one wicket, that of Scott Gilbert who was already on 57 and was the only Putney Bat to score over 20. Putney needed 14 to claim victory. A few fours came to ease the pressure but then dot balls fought back to put it back on. Then in the last over Gilbert swang at a ball outside off and it sailed over the square leg boundary for six. Putney had narrowly beaten Marble hill with 4 balls to go. And in this final the Last man really did stand.
Good luck to both Putney and Marble Hill as they enter the Champions League and Qualifiers.
